There are many different powders, and the way to use them often varies with the intent. We are going to focus on the local type practices. Many of these methods of European and African traditions, which blended into American Folk Magic. They fall into several different categories.
Powdering
This is a very simple form of imbuing something with the essence or intent of the powder. Simply dust the recipient with the powder with the intent of the recipient gaining the attributes of the powder. The recipient could be a person, candle, amulet, charm, or other tool for a ritual. This can be done very simply, or as a part of a high ritual.
Sprinkling or Casting
Sprinkling is when you lay down a salt or powder often used with protective items. The salt or powder can be lain down in a live across entryways, the perimeter of a room or house, or sprinkled about in the area the user wants to affect. When sprinkling the user in a Hoodoo tradition would take 21 steps. If the space is smaller you can take steps in sets of three, seven or nine. Often people with say prayers or curses while sprinkling depending on intent. No matter what the intent, the one doing the working should walk backwards. This backwards action is used to confuse the spirits and delay any repercussions.
Blowing
Blowing is done by placing a small amount of the salt or powder the palm or a piece of paper and blowing the item off. This can be done towards a person, place, direction, or in some higher magic the four sacred corners.
Dressing
Dressing is most often used with candle magic to increase the potency of the intent. The candle is rolled into the powder to coat the outside, many time after the candle was rolled in magic oils. The act of using the powder after the oil is referred to as double dressing. This technique (without the oil) is often used on business cards to help land a job, contracts, or increase business. It can also be used in conjunction with love letters to make the recipient see the sender in a better light or whichever effect is the intent,
Drawing Symbols
Drawing symbols with salts and powders can be a great way to increase the intent of the symbol. Taking a good Protective salt or powder adds strength to a protective circle. Using a powder to pour symbols relevant to the symbol’s intent is a great way to help in spell visualization. Of course power powders are great for magical patterns on the altar.
Wearing
Wearing a powder can be as simple as using a baby powder or talc powder. This can be considered a form of dressing one’s body. You can also add them to a sachet, medicine bag, Gris-Gris bag, or whichever type of bag falls into your tradition. Invisibility or misdirect powders can be worn in the shoe to impart their intents on the wearer as well.
There are many more ways of using the powders. Often a tradition will have a particular way that others do not use. There are no wrong ways to use these tools. If there is a way described above that does not fit your particular tradition, ignore it.
