Dreamcatchers are a Native American tradition. The legend states that the air at night is filled with both good dreams and also nightmares. The dreamcatcher acts as a filter sorting through the good dreams and nightmares (or bad dreams). The dreamcatcher literally “catches” the dreams before they enter the mind of the sleeper. The good dreams know the way through and are able to slip through the hole in the center and the other holes in the webbing and travel gently down the feathers where they slip into the minds of the dreamers. Nightmares do not know the way and become tangled in the web where they are held until the first rays of the morning light destroy them.
Many people also now believe that a dreamcatcher should be “emptied” or “shaken out” to remove any negative energy or negative dreams that may have survived the morning light. This can be important if direct sunlight does not reach the dreamcatcher. It is believed a dreamcatcher can become “clogged” with the negative dreams & energy and be no longer able to protect the dreams of the sleeper if it is not cleared each night. The “cleaning” process is performed by getting a container of water (about the width of the dream catcher) that is mixed with blessed salt taking the dream catcher down and shaking it vigorously (with care so as not to damage or destroy the dreamcatcher) 3 to 9 times (or until you feel it is “clean”). Envision all the negativity (picture it as black/dirty) going into the water where it is sterilized (envision the water glowing with pure white light).
Another method of clearing the dreamcatcher is using sage and wafting it through the dream catcher (and over the entire dreamcatcher). Set your intention before starting that the sage will clear the dream catcher of any negative energy/dreams that have built up on it. It is best to have a mantra or prayer such as “I now call the divine power to cleanse this dream catcher of all negativity and all energy that does not serve my <or insert name if clearing for someone else> highest good.” Repeat this mantra (or write one of your own) over and over out loud until the process is complete.
