Magic 101 - Use of Seashells in Magic
By Drew Hagar

Our ancestors before the modern era were closer to spirit in the natural world.  They not having access to a global community often used what was in the local area to its greatest potential. Seashells have a long history of use in magic. Seashells also have a long connection with the various sea gods and goddesses of many different cultures. Of course shells are the main focus of the Water Witch or Shell Magic practitioner.

Being born of the Ocean, all seashells share several properties including love, protection, and prosperity. These underlying properties are in addition to any specific properties of particular shells. All shells are often used in Drawing in things you desire.

Love - Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love uses the seashell as her symbol. Using Seashells in your workings or wearing them as jewelry is a way to attract a mate.  Use of seashell in hair ornaments are particularly effective in this method.

Protection -  A Shell is all about protection. It’s primary purpose is to keep the owners safe from passing predators. All Sea Shells have strong protective energies.

Prosperity - Many a culture used shells of different types as currency. From the Wampum of North America to the Cowrie shells or Africa and North America. These age old connections assist in money workings.

Seashells in general are strongly associated with the Element of water. They are also associated with the Moon and the feminine divine.

Terminology 101 - Invoke and Evoke
By Drew Hagar

One common set of terms used in various working is Evoke and Invoke.  Both words are similar in theory, but in Practice, they have different consequences.

To evoke is to call upon a being ( deity of otherwise) and ask it to join you during your working. This form of magic is an external working with the being called.  You can just request the presence to aid you or you can make an offering for said being’s involvement.

To Invoke is to enter into a voluntary form of possession. This allows the being ( deity or otherwise) to manifest through you as a human host. You are inviting the being into yourself to speak through you, act through you, or use your body to perform whichever working you are casting.

It is always best to use Evocation when starting out working with an unfamiliar being. This will allow you as the practitioner to gain a better understanding of what will be required in the relationship.  It is highly recommended that you know the motivations of the being well prior to letting it inhabit your body even for a temporary period.

Typically, if you’re new to spiritual practices such as Wicca or Paganism, most people will advise you to hold off on invoking deity until you’ve learned enough to have a good handle on what’s happening. It may be a good idea to focus instead on evoking, and communing with the gods, before you go inviting them to take control of you, even if it is just on a temporary basis.
